This metal insect, the South Austin Statue of Liberty, now enthroned in retirement at Threadgill’s World Headquarters, was the mascot of Terminix Pest Control for decades, perched at the corner of Lamar and 12th. Fraternities used to put up a reward for the loonies who were bold or drunk enough to steal the thing, and a few succeeded over the years. I used this one of many subplots in my first novel, Rock Critic Murders. It’s on my mind a lot lately, since I just uploaded the ePub version on Amazon, and I’m almost finished with the multi-touch version for the iPad, which will have music, videos, and other fun goodies.
