South Congress Ave., or SoCo, has been in a hyper trendy mode for years now, but its vintage bones shine through with pride. The Austin Motel, like its cousin in the next block south, the San Jose, was for many years one of those places one went to take a date, or find one, if she charged by the hour. Originally, they were “tourist courts” on the way south from the capitol on South Congress Avenue, also known then as the San Antonio Highway, but you have to wonder if a subliminal message was intended all along, or the designer was able to read far into the future to the day when the joint would be affectionately known as The Dick Motel. Here it’s not quite February, yet it seems to be beckoning the SXSW hordes with its bright red beacon.
